Ken’s Story

In 2013, Ken had flu-like symptoms one day and thought it would pass. The next day, after his wife took his temperature, they realized that Ken was running a 102F degree fever. At urgent care, they found that his blood pressure was dropping which caused them to make the immediate decision to get him to the ICU. By the time he arrived, he was going into septic shock. For the next three days, Ken and his care team worked diligently to save his life using vasopressors, which they luckily did.  As a result, Ken is a bilateral below the knee and all ten fingers at the first joint amputee.

With the help of prosthetics and orthotics, Ken is able to do most things in his life without restriction. His experience at SPOC as been “overly positive.” He found “a very caring and giving staff, all very competent, all very knowledgeable, and all reflecting John’s method and patient care.” He appreciates the level of communication and how easy it has been to get his mechanical Naked Prosthetics Fingers giving him more ability to grip and pick things up with his hands.

Ken also runs an amputee support group called “EnMotion” which is hosted at SPOC from April to December. He notes that when he went through his amputee journey, having a mentor and someone who could empathize with his situation was incredibly helpful. He has even gone through training by the Amputee Coalition Group so that he can now be someone to offer suggestions to other amputees based on his life experiences.
